"Feeling let down by the Victoria in Kirkcaldy"

About: Victoria Hospital / General Surgery Victoria Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I was going through my miscarriage last December and I was rushed into Victoria hospital because of the severe pain. I was treated OK to start with until I was transferred into the maternity ward.

When pressing the button for the nurses to come it took over 15 minutes for one to come and see me, this wasn't just once, it was a few times, and the next day when it was over a nurse came and spoke to me and I felt was very judgmental towards me. They said to me that I should just get on with my life now because I am young. I was angry. I wanted my baby and tried for it. I got no support whatsoever. Not even a goodbye when my partner came to pick me up and not even one of the nurses came to see me out.

I had pressed the button to tell them I was getting picked up and a staff members said someone would come and see me first, I waited and waited and no one came so I had to leave. It wasn't a nice experience at all, it would have been so much easier on me if they were supportive, and when it comes to me having a baby I won't be choosing the Vic.

Dear "Countney"

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience which was very sad to read. I am so sorry that your pregnancy ended and cannot begin to imagine how difficult this must have been for you. At times like this support and humanity are so important and I am really sorry that you had no sense of this from staff at the time.

Posting a story like this is very brave and it gives us an opportunity to share your experience with the staff working in the Unit to help them to understand the importance of their actions and behaviours. I will make sure your story is passed on to the appropriate staff.

I was disappointed to hear of your lack of confidence for a future pregnancy and whilst I appreciate your right to go elsewhere, if there is anything we can do to re instate your confidence then I would be happy to ask the Midwifery Manager to speak to you directly. If you would like to chat this through or meet to discuss then please contact Patient Relations on 01592 648153 and a member of staff will happily assist in making the necessary arrangements.

Kind Regards

Dear "Countney"

I want you to know that I have read your comments about your recent experience when, sadly, you had a miscarriage. I was very disappointed to learn that your treatment was far below the standards I expect us to achieve and how that added to an already distressing time. Please accept my personal apologies.

I do hope that you and your partner will feel able to accept the offer made by my colleague, Louise, to have a meeting to talk through your feelings with us, so that we may try to regain your confidence.

With best wishes,

John Wilson

Chief Executive NHS Fife.
