A massive thank-you to the Midwives on Labour ward 30/31 - in particular a big thank-you to the midwives with whom I had the pleasure of spending my entire labour (all 4hrs of it) with. They kept me entertained and relatively calm and comfortable throughout. Every process was explained fully and consented beforehand (although towards the end I had no clue what I was saying!) and henceforth I was able to naturally deliver a happy and healthy baby girl weighing in at 7lb 11oz. The after-care was unfortunately not as fantastic - the room was ridiculously hot and I was told repeatedly that I needed to get out of bed for a shower - despite feeling very weak/faint due to lack of fluids. I was not encouraged to breastfeed nor given any advice on doing so despite asking numerous times for a bit of privacy to enable me to give the 1st feEd within an hour of birth (as recommended in all the booklets I have read) We then had a mammoth wait for a bed on the ward - despite giving birth at 7:05pm it was approx 1AM before I got into bed/settled. The next morning I was told I would be going home but did not get out of the hospital until 2 days later! due to the fact that my little girl had been sick green vomit - having not been told that this was anything to worry about I did not report it to Midwives straight away which resulted in about 5 people telling me that it could be a sign of everything from swallowing own pooh to possible ruptured intestine/needing surgery and x-rays! This meant that my baby had to be rushed down to the prem ward for an overnight stay. This caused so much unnecessary stress for myself, my baby and my husband and I feel it was a total over-reaction as eventually we were told that it was most likely that baby was just clearing her airways of any remaining amniotic fluid from the womb. The after-care was not what I was expecting at all - I felt like I was doing allot of waiting around to be seen by Midwives and despite all my checks being done I was still sat around waiting to be discharged for a long time (and taking up another persons bed! - no wonder it took so long to get taken to the ward after birth!) Overall I had a very positive birth experience at Leicester General hospital. I would recommend it to others due to the kind and attentive staff and the 'homely' atmosphere that they strive to create for you - just improve the after-care!
