"Fractured Ankle"

About: Warrington Hospital

I was admitted on the 2nd June following a fractured ankle - A&E was very busy which resulted in 3 hours on a bed in a corridor - far from ideal. No pain relief was offered or support . Once I had my X-ray which confirmed fracture the staff in A&E were fantastic , kind and professional at all times - a credit to the Trust. I was transferred to CDU as no beds - this was very short staffed considering patients are transferred from A&E - this was even more obvious after 9pm with minimal staffing. The porters were also very noisy shouting etc which again was not acceptable especially when lights were turned out. I was transferred to an overflow ward due to no orthopaedic beds being available at approx 2am. The ward staff on C20 were lovely, very approachable , sense of humour and also the professionalism expected from a large trust. Their orthopaedic knowledge was average but this is to be expected on a non orthopaedic ward. One thing I would comment on , is when a patient has to use a commode that they are not just given toilet tissue but also something to wash hands . I unfortunately had to use a commode numerous times due to the amount of IV fluids given and each time had to request this. I am sure just because patients are unable to use ward toilets / wash facilities that toilet tissue and hand washing stops. I am sure I am not the only patient who has experienced this level of care - the request was not always met ! I asked family to provide these items. I have also experienced Ortho outpatients and again I can't complain on the level of service and support given. The one area which was difficult was x ray - this department was extremely busy and I felt sorry for reception staff who received numerous complaints from patients having to wait for thier x rays. I am sure if either the reception team or member of staff from x ray spoke to patients in waiting room on a regular basis, apologising for the delay or giving an estimated waiting time then this may support in reducing the level of upset patients. Overall a positive experience with a couple of areas that need a review .
