Some time ago I brought my 28 year old daughter to A&E for worrying symptoms of being unable to speak, weakness one side of face, aura, nausea, missing part of vision, head pain. When giving symptoms at the desk the lady said there were too many symptoms for the computer and she could not put them all in. We waited over an hour with my daughter getting worse. I went to the desk and asked what the system was for prioritising patients and she said that head injuries went first, (she had never asked if my daughter had had a head injury). I said I was worried about the possibility of a stroke but she said there was nothing she could do and that the nursing staff would make the decision on what she had entered in the computer. I said I was worried about whether she had entered everything I had told her and she told me to go and sit down. My daughter was seen about 20 minutes after that. The medical staff were very thorough, although whilst in the treatment/investigation area the trolley my daughter was on was put next to a desk with lots of patient details visible to us and a pile of cotton wool with blood on which at one point fell on to my daughter's hand. We were satisfied with the medical investigations and diagnosis of migraine, but I remain concerned that qualified staff are not on the reception desk, ie people that can spot a possible emergency.
