"Macmillan Nurse"

About: NHS Highland (Health)

(as the patient),

I have been lucky to have a wonderful Macmillan nurse visit me for the past 4 years since I was diagnosed with womb cancer back in Dec 2009. She has been a wonderful help and support, not only to me but also my husband. I have long term side effects of my cancer treatment and she has always been there to help me.

On her last visit a couple of weeks ago, she told me that she is leaving her post and moving elsewhere which means that I no longer have a Macmillan nurse and it would appear that the post is unlikely to be filled in the near future.

I live on an island off the west coast of Scotland and she covered the island as well as some of the mainland as part of her workload.

Myself and I imagine many of her other patients feel very let down that we may not be getting a replacement anytime soon.

Dear butebird,

Thank you for making contact via Patient Opinion and for sharing your concerns. I am delighted that you and your husband have been very happy with the level of support of our MacMillan Nurse has provided to you over the last 4 years. I can confirm that the existing MacMillan Nurse will be leaving at the end of June and that we will be advertising to replace this post. A workforce meeting is being held next Monday when this post, along with others will be considered and approved for recruitment.

I hope you are reassured that we will be replacing this post as soon as we possibly can.

I fully recognise the important role MacMillan Nurses provide along with the rest of the care team and I do hope that we are successful in recruiting to the post. In the meantime please be assured that I have asked the MacMillan Nurse to liaise with the local GPs and the community nursing team to ensure that they are made aware of patients who may require support until such times as we have recruited.

I hope this response is helpful but should you wish to discuss this matter further please do not hesitate to contact me on Tel 01369708345 viv.hamilton@nhs.net

Kind regards

Viv Hamilton
