"Stressful cancelling surgery at the very last..."

About: Gloucestershire Royal Hospital

I was due for surgery today on my clavicle (detached shoulder)& at the last moment the surgery was cancelled. I heard people talking earlier that there was a problem with a theatre not knowing it would affect me. I was not told a thing just left to wait , wait and wait in my hospital gown from 7.30 am approx until gone 11am I did expect to wait but not without explanation for so long.I was told my surgery would be second in line. after a very long wait I could see the staff nurse making a call around 11am as she could see how long I had been waiting, she then came to me after the call very red faced and told me surgery was cancelled and the surgeon would come and see me and explain I have heard nothing from anyone, I was also told by the staff nurse I would be phoned later I have heard nothing. I changed out of my hospital gown and made my way home I was handed a PALS leaflet from the staff nurse as I left who did everything she could in vain. I left without any explanation but did get offered a drink which seemed more like an offering of kindness. I reported the problem to PALS on the way out and was told my experience would be noted . Over all my experience was very stressful & upsetting and the feeling of being just another number was sad . Maybe someone could try explain why ?as if there was a problem it would be really nice to let the patient know something of an explanation.

Hello there, Many thanks for taking the time to share this feedback with us. We're really sorry to hear that your operation was cancelled and understand how frustrating this must have been. There are many reasons why this may have happened, such as requiring the theatre for emergency surgery or to manage staff sickness, and it may be worth speaking again to the PALS team who may be able to get more information for you. It sounds like you already have the contact details for them, but just in case, you can call them on 0800 019 3282 (Free phone) or email pals.gloucestershirehospitals@glos.nhs.uk Apologies again for any inconvenience we may have caused. Best wishes The team at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
