"Concerns about the appointment system at Macclesfield Hospital"

About: Central and Eastern Cheshire PCT Congleton War Memorial Hospital / Diabetic medicine Macclesfield District General Hospital / Diabetic medicine

(as the patient),

I have attended the diabetic clinic in Macclesfield Hospital for 32 years. On the 10th April I saw Dr. Wai, the consultant at Congleton War Memorial Hospital. Unfortunately in June I started feeling unwell so I made another appointment to attend the doctors clinic at Macclesfield. There were no problems. Then on the 7th July a community diabetes specialist nurse sent a letter saying sorry you were unable to appear on the 23rd May. This was incorrect as I had not booked that day. In fact I saw the nurse (Maggie Witmoore) on the 25th July who took good care of me. I had made a follow up appointment.

However, on the 9th September East Cheshire NHS Trust canceled my appointment for the 23rd October due to unforeseen circumstances. It was rescheduled for the 22nd January 09 at the Memorial Hospital.

I went back to see Dr. Wai on the 17th October. The details concerning how I was feeling had not been kept up to date. The information had not been shared between the nurse and the doctor. This gave me no indication that I was seeing a diabetes specialist. Dr. Wai had no knowledge of my recent check ups, there was no record at all.

I had another letter on the 7th November 08 from Mid Cheshire Hospital giving me another appointment with Dr.Wai on the 4th February at Macclesfield Hospital. When I arrived at the hospital, it was in complete shambles as patients appointments had been canceled without notification.

I have been to two public meetings but these have not been at Congleton War Memorial Hospital or Macclesfield where the problem is. Most of my appointments have been rearranged and canceled for the past 6 months. The administration between these hospitals is a mess and there needs to be better communication between them.

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We are very sorry that there has been confusion over your appointments at Macclesfield Hospital. From October 2008, the joint clinician network on Diabetes service was restructured and managed by Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As the service has been going through a period of change this could explain why things have not been running as smoothly as usual. However we can reassure you that things have settled down and should now be as efficient as usual. Your comments have been passed on to Dr Wai. She has confirmed that she will bring your concerns to the attention of the Community Diabetic Specialist Nurse Service and ensure that in future a system is in place to ensure communication between the nurses and the hospital at all stages of the patient’s journey. Dr Wai will also discuss your feedback with Mid Cheshire Hospitals Foundation Trust and pass it on to the Director of Medical Specialties at East Cheshire Trust. If you would like to discuss any issues further please contact out Customer Care Team on freephone 0800 161 3997 or email.
