I was truly dismayed, disappointed and disgusted by the treatment, or apparent lack of for that matter, of my father after being admitted to this unit. No one appeared to have read his notes. He was left for the best part of twelve hours not receiving any medication for his fluid retention which put not only his heart in danger but also it meant his lungs were slowly filling with fluid which potentially could have drowned him. It took my emotionally fragile mother having a meltdown to get someone to do something for him. He was left in a six bedded unit after nursing staff were told by A & E that he was MRSA positive and there was a side room lying empty which put five other patients at risk of infection. In my opinion this was just not acceptable. The nursing staff we met in this unit at that time left a lot to be desired. Thankfully he was only there overnight before being transferred to A12 where he improved to the point of being discharged yesterday. I hope no other family experiences what our family did in the Acute Assessment Unit.
