"My 85 year old Mothers recent visit"

My 85 year old Mother was brought in on Sunday 8th June with a temp of 41* . We knew it was due to Cellulitis and also that it responded to a certain antibiotic. We told the staff she had been on another antibiotic for almost 6 weeks and we felt it was not effective. It was not until the Tues evening that I spoke to the Doctor re this and he was unaware. He immediately changed her meds. Despite being told constantly that Mother is deaf the staff spoke to her normally and Mum answered wrongly because she felt she had to say yes or no,, Consequently she was saying she had no pain or had pain when it was quite the opposite. My sister who is a nurse in another hospital also took two stool samples and handed them to the staff , on Wednesday the Doctor wanted her to stay in as they needed to test her faeces. There was no trace of the previous samples ! We also found Mum in the toilet in a mess, she was trying to clean herself and had had no help from the staff despite being unsteady on her very painful leg. My sister and I took over all her care whilst we were there from 11,ish in the morning until around 6 at night. The one thing I can say is that the staff were lovely, they were very friendly and appeared to be very helpful. It was the lack of communication that we found unsettling and I wonder how our Mother would have fared had we not been there to speak for her. We also felt the cleanliness of the floors in the toilet left alot to be desired . We were relieved to get her home as we felt she was safer in our care and her GP. We were afraid of her contracting an infection. In conclusion we would say the staff were very nice, the young Doctor extremely helpful and efficient once he understood the situation but I would be very reluctant for my Mother to have to go again as an in - patient.
