"Mixed experience on maternity ward"

When I went into hospital to give birth, I was fortunate enough to be looked after by some wonderful staff but was also left feeling neglected at times. We arrived at the hospital at 4am and the staff were very attentive and we were carefully monitored and well looked after, with great communication from the doctors. Later in the day we were moved onto a pre-labour ward and I was given a pessary to soften my cervix, which the doctors said I should only keep in until 10pm, at which point I would be induced. 10pm came and went and we were told that they didn't have the one-to-one care available to induce me, so I would have to keep the pessary in until a midwife became available. At this point the nurse looking after our ward seemingly went home ill without doing a handover. At 5am I expressed my concern to a slightly dismissive nurse and a short while later, I was visited by a midwife (due to end her shift). She said that we needed to urgently remove the pessary and proceed with induction, so I'd have to quickly eat something as I'd be on water only following induction. Once I was allocated a midwife, my one-to-one care was exceptional and the labour room was lovely - modern and clean. Later that evening I was diagnosed with a womb infection as over 40 hours had passed since my waters broke. This meant I had to have an emergency c section, after which my baby and I both had to be put on IV antibiotics to fight the infection. I couldn't help feeling that the staff shortages were to blame for this infection and it could have been avoided if I'd received the one-to-one care when I was meant to. I must say though that the anaesthetists, midwives and doctors that looked after me through my c section were exceptional and made the experience a fantastic one. Once in a ward following my stint in recovery, i was somewhat neglected and had to ask staff for pain relief three times, before receiving medication and being told by apologetic staff (just starting their morning shift) that I'd gone through my first night post-c section havimg only been given paracetamol. That explained the agony then... I was then moved to a private room as I was still on the IV. It was great to get some privacy, but i think that being in a side room meant I was sometime forgotten, and again was left on occasion without pain relief and antibiotics. There was also a huge blood stain on the floor of my room (not mine!) which I had to ask to be cleaned. It was in the middle of the floor so how it had been missed I don't know, but surely cleanliness is important when fighting infection?! So a mixed review really, some wonderful staff but just not enough of them, which ultimately put the health of my baby and myself at risk.
