For the last four years, my son has been misdiagnosed with asthma by a series of health professionals at Wythenshawe Hospital. He was out of breath a lot, not putting on any weight and was tired and listless a lot. His mum and I knew it couldn't be asthma, but the doctors all said that it wasn't worth looking deeper into his symptoms because of him being so young.
We felt we were being fobbed off by everyone we saw who were under a consultant so we said we wouldn't see anyone else, only the consultant. Finally, our GP mentioned that my son's symptoms reminded her of her Dad's, who had a gluten allergy. We researched gluten free foods ourselves and tried our son on a gluten free diet and almost straight away, his symptoms disappeared. He's now a fit, active and healthy 6 year old.
We were frustrated that no-one had listened to us for four years and frustrated that our GP at Barrington Road Medical Centre didn't give us much information on gluten free diets. We had to find it out ourselves.
