"I can honestly say nothing."

About: New Cross Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

I can honestly say nothing.

What could be improved

Communication of staff to relatives and patients,

Treating patients and visitors with respect and dignity at all times and listening to concerns

Anything else?

As i am currently training to be part of the healthcare proffesional team i was recently disgusted with the care that my grandad recieved. On December 21st my grandad was taken to new cross A + E after a fall, after a few hours of being there we recieved a call to tell us that it was unlikely that he would survive the next 24 hours. In distress many of his family members went to see him, we were told that because of his resp problems that there was nothing they could do but make him comfortably. We were sad but wanted to see him out of pain and accepted what we were being told. His was transfered to EAU where my parents stayed all night. After a restless and painfull night my grandad was still with us, IV fluids continued to fill his body along with IV antibiotics and an xray was carried out as it was clear that he was distressed and in pain from his fall. That afternoon we visited only to find he was in a soaking wet bed and had clearly been in it for a while, to then only be told that the nurses were to busy with really poorly patients to deal with it so to my disgust we had to find and change the covers ourselves. Later that evening we were told that the xray had shown he had broken his shoulder so they were going to offer pethidine for pain relief, it took a futher 3 hours for that pethidine to be administered then after an hour it had worn off and he was in pain and distressed again only to wait another 3 hours for another to be administered. After a night and several hours being treated with no respect or dignaty as covers were taken off him in front on us on many occasionson in the EAU he was transfered to ward D17 where much of the same care was given. At this point he was bed bound, could no longer take sips of water or talk, as his advocote i could no longer let him suffer so i requested that the consultant put him on the liverpool care pathway to only be refused this much needed end of life care. My trust and confidence in this hospital has gone.
