"P.Pinchon Coronary care"

My God-Mother suffered a heart attack and although she lived in Southend was immediatley brought to the Basildon Coronary Care unit. When I arrived was immediately informed of what had happened, what treatment she was being given. The consideration that was extended to me upon that first instance was a hallmark that prevailed over the coming weeks. My God-Mother had been put on a cooling down system and I was informed that this was the best way forward for her and that it protected her brain from the heart attack. Already at this point I was encouraged by the optimism of looking forward.with this strategy. She was later transfered to Rodin ward to assist in her coming around. While there the staff constantly let me know what they were doing and why. I was always kept informed of her progress and what they were doing for her. The doctors held a meeting with the family (only three of us!) to tell us that a unfavourable conclusion was most probable. It was good to see that all members of the Nursing staff were present so that our wishes would be known throughout and know confusion would arise. From then on she was treated with utmost dignity and respect. Constant monitoring and ensuring that she wasn't in any visible pain throughout was evident. After spending a considerable amount of time on the final day watching over her I felt I had to rest and left to get some sleep. An hour later I received a call to say that she has passed away and came back to find her in her room with all the medical paraphenalia gone, her lying in a neat bed. The care that she received while alive was mirrored in the care of her in death. At a time of most anguish and heartbreak the staff were comforting, considerate and gave me the space and time to grieve. Throughout this period I was also visited by the McMillan nurse who dealt with greaving relatives or those about to be.No words could express the admiration for the staff. No one person could be singled out as being the best, the team of doctors, nurses and assisting staff were the best and remain an exemplary batch of caring and dedicated people.
