About: Poole General Hospital

I am appalled at the way that my mother was treated in the day surgery unit when undergoing treatment for mouth cancer. She was woken up approximately 1 and a half hours after having had a third of her tongue removed. She asked for pain relief and the nurse never came back with any. I called repeatedly on the phone to find out where she was and what was going on and no-one knew. Finally, I called at 4.30 and was told that she had been discharged. We were told prior to the operation that the surgery warranted at least a one night stay. My 72 year old mother was discharged under two hours after having had a general anaesthetic another relative having been called who picked her up! The bruises on her hands developed into very swollen hematomas which another nurse spotted in the lift and rushed to get ice for her and cold compresses. The cancer nurses went to look for her later that day and were shocked to find she had been discharged. She was also sent home with inadequate pain relief. I realised this and gave her the right dose of morphine that night and then the cancer nurse confirmed that what I had presumed was indeed correct; rather than what the department prescribed. All I can say is poor work. The managers, surgeons and nurses should be putting their patients before targets. Really third world care and the title above is deserved. You are welcome to respond to the challenges posed by this post.
