After being sent to A&E by my husbands GP on the Friday prior to bank holiday, we were very disappointed with the communication and service given. GP had rung ahead to say he was sending my husband in to see the stroke team as he suspected a TIA. We registered, was seen by a triage nurse then waited. We were not informed we needed to wait for blood test results to return or that they can take up to 2hrs. We enquired at the desk how long we would be before being seen, only to be told the stroke team have no connection to A&E and we should speak to someone in the trolley area! no support or specific direction was given. The nurse we spoke to in the trolley area sent us back out to wait while she made some enquires, eventually a Dr appeared and we went into the trolley area to be assessed, or so we thought, my husband was asked to repeat everything he'd previously said (which was written down) and informed the stroke team are not available in the evenings! We were asked to return on Monday morning, bank holiday, to speak with the stroke team. This whole process took over 5hrs, with us eventually leaving after 23.00. We returned Monday as asked, my husband went through the whole incident of what happened when he suffered his possible TIA and some checks were completed. We were informed this was probably not a TIA but needed to return the next day for an ECG as no-one was available that day with it being bank holiday! This was to rule out any abnormal activity happening with my husbands heart. We returned first thing Tuesday morning, completed the ECG then spent over an hour amusing ourselves as the consultant, we were thought we were seeing, was on his morning rounds. We eventually returned to the stroke ward and waited to be seen, after a short time the nurse returned and told us we could go home as the consultant had looked at the ECG and was happy, he was stood in the corridor as we walked out and did not even have to decency to speak personally to us! Not happy with the service we received and hate that we have no choice in which hospital provides our healthcare!!!!
