"Everyone so kind and understanding but one area needs consideration"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

After suffering ectopic pregnancy I required emergency surgery. I was well looked after from nurses, doctors and all in theatre.. Everyone was so kind and understanding at a very upsetting time.

However one area that you may wish to consider for others. I was sent on my own from ward for a scan. I had to sit in the ultrasound area for 30mins on my own whilst 6 or 7 happy couples came and gone with photos of their scans. This was a bit insensitive I think after I had just been told I was not going to have my pregnancy

Thank you for your kind words regarding the care your received during this extremely difficult and upsetting period. I take note and appreciate your comments and concerns regarding your experience when attending for your scan. It is impossible for us to know in advance what the outcome of a scan may be and therefore very difficult to be able to separate patients who may receive upsetting news from those who have a happier outcome as we do not have this information whilst the patients are in the waiting area prior to their scan.

We will however look to see if there is any way that we can improve on this. I do apologise for the length of time you had to endure this situation as this would not be our usual practice.

We have allocated time slots for the ward when we would send our ladies for scan and these are normally done very promptly, but if attendance at the hospital was outwith these times there may have been a delay due to activity within the scan department on that particular day.

We do allow partners/relatives to accompany patients to the scan department if they are present. I am sorry for your sad loss and if this situation has caused you any further stress in what has been an already difficult time for you.

I hope you are recovering well and if there is anything you wish to discuss further please contact me at the address below.

Thank you for taking time to reply. I appreciate how difficult it would be to try and keep people separate how in my situation I already had 3 scans and was aware that my pregnancy was ectopic.

It would have been less distressing a time for me if I had not had to wait in the waiting area for 30mins.

Kind regards
