"Awaiting a date to be taken into hospital"

About: Queen's Hospital (Romford)

have been having problems with walking which has involved pains in my legs and spine. I have now lost control of my legs down my left hand side and I am now struggling to walk. I had an MRI scan in November 2013 and went to see my consultant in January 2014. my consultant showed me the scan results and informed me there was no tumour growing in my spine or brain; however, he was concerned about lesions that were showing in my spine and brain. He explained I would be taken into hospital for 3-days to have fluid taken from my spine and have a course of Steroid injections to help with the pain and find out exactly what was wrong. He mentioned possible causes which included the first stages of MS; however, stated this was not definite. He was excellent and assured me if I had any concerns to contact his secretary. i left concerned but assured that my health was in good hands. From this point onwards my treatment has been appalling. I have called the consultant's secretary on multiple occasions and have left messages, I have never had a call back. when I did get through she assured me she would call me on the Monday to let me know when I would be told my admission date? I called back 1-week later and continually for 6-weeks until I finally got through. The conversation started with she had been busy, and she had been on holiday. when I explained my condition condition had worsened I was advised "I should see a doctor"! This took place in April 2014 I had still not heard anything so I contacted the secretary again to ask had anything been arranged. I was asked if I had been contacted by admissions. I said I do not know who this person was and I was advised to call back the following day to be updated on when I may be taken in for my investigation surgery. I called back (today, 03/06/2014) to be told that the person who was handling my admission had left and my details had been mislaid? I have now been advised to call back on the 4th June but after 10:30 as the admissions person did not start until 10:00. I am unsure if the condition I have is deteriorating due to the lack of any treatment or if the problem is time critical to if my condition can be improved or cured? 3-years ago I was active and playing tennis 3 times a week and now cannot walk up a flight of stairs without stopping halfway. I cannot walk further than 100 yards without stopping and need to know if this is going to be my life going forward. as yet I have no answers and do not know where to turn?

Thank you for your comment. I am sorry that you have experienced difficulties reaching different staff within our hospital. I understand this must be very frustrating for you, and this needs to be addressed. For me to be able to look into this further, I will require more information from you. Please contact me through our PALS team on 01708 435 454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk. Yours sincerely, Stephen Burgess Medical Director
