"Experience of A&E"

About: Torbay Hospital

I unfortunately broke my wrist while on holiday on in North Bovey. We went first to Newton Abbot Hospital where we were treated very kindly but as it was evening their x-ray dept. was closed. However they prepared all the necessary forms which they hoped would speed the process and help staff at Torbay. They were very busy at A&E but I eventually went for an x-ray and after an hour or so to minor injuries. Here we were attended by a very efficient, friendly and cheerful young doctor, examined and told clearly that there were not enough staff to re-set my arm but gave me an appointment for the following morning. She then handed me over to the plaster room for temporary plaster which again was carried out with efficiency and friendly politeness. We arrived in good time the following morning to be told quite shortly after our appointment time came and went that there had been an emergency and I would be delayed, but they would keep me informed, which they did. Eventually going in just over an hour late we had nothing but the best from the consultant, the nurses, the assistant in 'plaster room' the second doctor who came to assist with the manipulation, the portable x-ray lady and anyone else who came in the room. We were kept informed and prepared for every step and my well being was always their priority. I can not speak more highly of the medical staff we encountered. Sadly the same can not be said of the receptionists. While I appreciate they do have a difficult job they should not treat us all as if we were an interruption to their social life. When one, eventually, dragged herself over to the window she was immediately interrupted by a colleague to make some comment about face book! Not a great front face to the hospital. Not wishing to finish on a negative, a huge thank you to all the medical staff who were brilliant.
