"Great dentist using common sense"

About: Kings College Dental Hospital / Dental medicine specialities

(as a relative),

We have had a nightmare trying to fix some dental problems with my daughter, who is dentist-phobic. The modern ideology seems to be that dentists must ask permission from the child before attempting any treatment, rather than defer to a parent's superior knowledge of the child's motivation and behaviour. Several times we had prepared our daughter for treatment only for the local dentist to ask her if she wanted it, which of course she did not, despite needing it very badly.

To cut a long story short, after a series of these encounters we were finding it impossible to get her treated, and she has suffered a series of infections.

So our last chance saloon was hospital dentistry combined with a sedative to overcome her (by now) insurmountable fear.

Today, thanks to a very practical senior Dentist at Kings College, we finally (at the 7th attempt!) had the badly infected tooth removed. What made this work was a combination of an excellent bedside manner, but also not being afraid to work with my wife to apply a sensible degree of restraint to the child during the process.

Excellent work. We are most grateful. Thanks.
