"Unacceptable way to deal with a special needs child"

About: Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust

(as a parent/guardian),

My 10 yr old son is Autistic. For 10 years I have prepared, supported and cajoled him to ensure that he could receive dental treatment, which causes him anxiety and he is not able to verbalise his fears and emotions.

During treatment at the practice, who were fully aware of his condition just because he jumped out of the dental chair as he was unable to say he was in pain, this apparently extremely rude, aggressive and physically imposing dentist, shouted at him and refused to treat him. This exchange took less than 3 mins and was completely unacceptable with any child, let alone one that has special needs that were clearly communicated.

As a result the long job of trying to get him back into a dentists chair is now nearly impossible and we may have to face him being sedated for any future treatment. In my opinion this is entirely due to the horrible attitude of the dentist.

Thank you for taking the time to post your story on this site.

I am really sorry to learn of the experience your ten year old son had with his dentist. It must have been very disappointing for you to accept that your son was not provided the full treatment after all the prepartion and hard work that you put in trying to convince him prior to the appointment. It is unclear from your post whether you had taken your son to his usual dentist or was seen by someone else, in light of his special need.

I am concerned that your son has not had his dental tretament and if this is urgently required, I would advise you to seek some advice. I also want to look into your concerns and offer you some solution but will be unable to do anything without your son's details. Also, I need to establish who offered this service as we only offer a limited range of dental services within Shropshire Community Trust. Most high street dental practices will fall outside the remit of the Community Trust but under the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG).

I will be more than happy to look into this for you if you wish to contcat me on either 0800 032 1107 or 01743 277689 or send me an email with your number at: pals@shropcom.nhs.uk for me to contact you.

Many thanks once again for taking the time to post your story and sorry for the experience your son had with his dentist.
