Generally speaking, a decision to change a dressing depends on the type of injury it is protecting. So, for example, if it is a dressing for burns, it is often better for the patient if the dressing is changed in a specialist burns unit. This is because it is a more sterile environment than a Minor Injuries Unit to protect against infection, specialist dressings will be used and the injury will heal much better. In this example, and having taken a case history of a patient beforehand, an Emergency Nurse Practitioner would provide advice without any ‘hands on’ treatment.
