"no help"

About: Berwick Infirmary

I went to the hospital nearly 2+ years ago, after a server fall from a horse. I in extreme pain drove myself to the hospital, to what was a quiet department. I was left to wait for a while but let this go as I believe the nurses care for patients in the hospital as well. I was eventually seen told I had just "pulled" it, given 2 paracetamol and an ibuprofen and sent on my way, to drive home with one arm. I was never offered to be seen by a doctor, even it ment waiting, I was never offered an xray, or even physically seen over by a nurse. After 2 years of pain and repeated trips to doctors, I have finally been seen by IMATS ( who are amazing by the way) and refered to ashinton and received an MR Anthorgram. In turn I have now found out I not all dislocated my shoulder, I did it in such a server way that I broke the bone and tore many ligaments, I am now waiting on surgery! Why was this not noticed by an a&e department, even being an minor injuries unit!? Had I been seen by a doctor or had an xray this would have shown up and 2+ yrs of repeating dislocations, pain and inconvenience to my working life could have been avoided. I am very disappointed with the treatment I received that day. Perhaps the nurses on that day where stretched so far with other work they just did not havetime for me, or as it was coming towards the end of the day they just ccouldn't be bothered. On the plus side, due to the same injury I ended up once again in a&e over new years, when I had my armed pulled and again had a sublaxtation, on this night I was seen very quickly and efficiently, given paracetamol again, and a sling. Once again I was not offered an xray or a return appointment to get one, and once again the dislocation and broken bone was not noticed.

Dear Sir/Madam, Can I firstly say how sorry I am to hear that your initial visit to Berwick Infirmary was not a positive one. Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience, all feedback is really important to us, both good and bad, as it helps us to continually improve. I can understand how upset you must have been to discover at a later date that you had sustained the injuries that you describe. I am so sorry - the ongoing pain and prolonged discomfort you describe sounds very difficult . When we receive anonymous feedback on NHS Choices it can make it difficult to provide individual responses to our patients in the way we would like. If you feel this is something that would be helpful to you please get in touch. My email address is Annie.laverty@northumbria-healthcare.nhs.uk With all best wishes, Annie
