"Cancelled Operation"

About: King George Hospital

My husband had emergency operation in May 2013. He needs another one and was advised by Consultant he would try to this in December 2013. This did not happened I was then told it would be January, so telephoned admissions to ascertain how much notice of operation we would be given. Only to be told it would not be January and it would not be February as the Consultant was on annual leave. But we were given a date for 14th march 2014. We had to cancel a holiday because dates clashed, and the operation is very important, We attended a pre admission interview and my husband who is self employed arranged for someone to cover his work (he is a Photographer ) Today 7th march (one week before his operation). We received a letter just saying the operation had been cancelled, gives no explanation, does not give another date, does not even say to telephone for an explanation. So we tried to telephone admissions department and the consultant's secretary. But we have not received a reply from anyone. This is totally immoral, our life is on hold, he can do very little work and I am retired on a pension. What happened to the Patients Charter ?, duty of care? or empathy come to that. I am so upset and absolutely disgusted and I am someone who have always defended our NHS service, (I put a review on Queens Hospital, praising how they looked after my elderly Aunt). I know how busy you are but My Husband has worked all his life. Two yrs ago my G.P. asked if I was still married to him. When I inquired why he asked, he said well I have not seen him for 8 yrs. At this moment I don't know where we go from here, other than to say I am going to my member of Parliament, and the Newspapers and anyone else I can get on board. Disgusted

Thank you for leaving your feedback. I am sorry that your husband’s operation was cancelled and that an alternative date has not been arranged. I understand this must be frustrating for you both, especially as you had to originally cancel your holiday plans. To be able to look into this further I require more information from you. Please contact me through our PALS team on 01708 435 454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk. Yours sincerely, Stephen Burgess Medical Director
