"Poor communication"

About: Princess Royal University Hospital (Orpington)

I had surgery at the PRUH on April 9th. A senior registrar disclosed I had a significant problem when I was barely conscious. I needed an ultrasound which was booked for the following day. No porter came to collect me so the staff arranged for a porter. We arrived in Radiology to fin out it had been `cancelled` by a porter. There was no attempt made by the radiology staff to do anything. On return to the ward and after several unsuccessful attempts by staff to contact the department, I went down myself to speak to the Head of Department. The radiology staff were dismissive and told me `sit over there` When I said I would rather stand, her response was to do as I liked! I did get my scan and that was followed a few weeks later by a CT scan. I was told that |I couldn't be told the results myself but that I would have to get my GP to request them. I find this bizarre that I do not get any respect and no one cares when I get the information that I need. Yesterday I was telephoned at home by the gynae.nurse sp[ecialist who asked me to attend for a MRI scan and bloods. When I asked why, she told me it was for "tumour markers" I don't know where the cancer is and my follow up appointment is not until June which is very unsatisfactory. I did manage to ring the department and ask them to fax a copy to my GP but wonder whether this would have been done automatically or not. All in all I will have waited 18months for surgery and 2 months for a firm diagnosis. I feel there is a marked lack of respect. I need to organize my life especially if it is to be shortened and I need information quickly and efficiently. I now have the situation that I have tell one of my sons who is away on holiday that I need further treatment and have no detailed information to hand. It is verging on cruelty to leave patients without information. I intend to ring on Monday and request some proper information and hope I wont be fobbed off anymore. By the way the drop down isn't accurate on your headers. I was in a surgical ward but not for a breast operation.

I am very sorry that you have been left not knowing what is being investigated and anxious because of the language used by the nurse who telephoned you. I will immediately seek to contact the nurse specialist this morning and ask that you be contacted again with more information. Alternatively if you wish to contact us directly please do so and we can liaise on your behalf with the medical team. Our contact details are kch-tr.palskent@nhs.net
