I had a plaster cast fitted in Portugal after dislocating a finger. The cast was to be removed after 3 weeks..despite the new orthopedic unit set up to avoid patients having to travel to Wansbeck, I was advised I could not have it done in Berwick Infirmary. . My neighbour aged 83 broke her wrist. Berwick infirmary would/could not even look at it. She was sent to Wansbeck via hospital car 1-1/2 hrs (12.15) later it having come from Newcastle Airport. She got home via Blyth at 8.30 pm distressed and in pain. She had to go again to Wansbeck a few days later for X-ray. Again they would not do it in Berwick? That time she came home via Rothbury feeling sick. She now has to have the cast taken off in Wansbeck. A total of 330 miles..this in no way places blame on hospital staff or the invaluable car service.. Northumbria Health Service are to blame for cutting the services and treatments here in Berwick..disgraceful.
