"Visit to A&E with an abscess"

About: Queen's Hospital / Accident & emergency

(as the patient),

I went to A&E this month with a returning problem of an abscess in my belly button, this is the second one I have had, due to key hole surgery I had 3yrs ago.

I waited 2hrs for triage that was ok. I was told I need to see the surgeon that I would have blood taken to check infection and that I would probably be put on a drip.

I waited 7hrs to finally be seen by the surgeon, no blood had been taken and no drip either. The surgeon looked at it, pushed a bit, said I had a mild skin infection. I said no, there is an abscess there, I know there is. I had been under a surgeon for this before, to be told go home take pain killers.

The next day it burst. I went to my own doctor to get this sorted with antibiotics. The surgeon was very offhand and really didn't seem interested. I felt I should have had better treatment than that, I was in such a lot of pain. I didn't know what to do with myself but wait for the inevitable.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback with us on NHS Choices. I am concerned by your experience visiting our hospital. It sounds like you were given misleading information, I apologise for that and also for what appears to be a wrongful diagnosis of your ulcer. You are right to expect better treatment than what you appear to have received. Our staff should also be caring and express excellent communication with our patients. I would like to look into this for you and will need further information in order to do so. Please contact me via our PALS team on 01708 435 454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk and I will investigate. Yours sincerely, Nadeem Moghal Medical Director
