"A day in North Devon Hospital"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

I recently attended North Devon Hospital for a bladder tumour resection. Although I was informed I may have to stay 1 or 2 nights, in the event I was discharged at the end of the first day.

I was requested to arrive at 7.30am but it was not until 1.30pm that I was taken into theatre. On waking up in recovery, I knew from reading the information leaflets that I should be drinking. I had to ask for water repeatedly while lying in recovery.

A bed was not available until after 5pm i.e. over 3 hours after coming round. By about 8pm my urine was largely free of blood and I was allowed to go home. Previously I asked whether I should be taking my usual medication (Tamsulosin and Finasteride) which I still had in my possession. There was some doubt about this but I took the tablets anyway.

Despite the above, all staff were very pleasant and friendly.

Dear Patient

Thank you for taking the time to add your comments to the website.

I was very sorry to learn that you had a long wait until you underwent your operation recently. If I may explain patients are always asked to arrive at 7.30 am - particularly when on a Urology list, and it is difficult to determine what time a patient will go to theatre, as some operations can take longer, or less time, than anticipated. I can fully appreciate how frustrating it must have been for you waiting to go for your operation, however I am pleased to see that staff made you as comfortable as possible during the wait, caring for you in a friendly and pleasant manner.

I have spoken to the theatre manager regarding your comments surrounding not being offerred water following the operation, and he has assured me that he will speak with his staff reminding them to offer water to patients where appropriate. He has also asked me to pass on his sincere apologies that you weren't offerred a drink.

With regards to your comment that a bed was not available to you until 5pm, this may have been due to large numbers of emergency admissions following the last bank holiday, which has caused severe bed pressures on the ward, however if you would like me to look into the reasons in more depth I would require more information.

I would also be more than happy to look into your medication issues, and if you would lke me to do so please contact PALS on 01271 314090 who will be happy to support you further.

I do hope you are now recovering from your operation and wish you well for the future.

Kind regards

Jayne
