About: Dewsbury & District Hospital Dewsbury & District Hospital Dewsbury WF13 4HS
I was taken ill on Sunday night (4th May) with severe abdominal pain and projectile vomiting following my evening meal. in the two weeks prior to this I experienced abdominal pain and sickness following most meals. I was taken into A&E at around 11pm where I was seen by 3 nurses and 1 doctor, I was asked to provide a urine pregnancy test. I was advised I would receive fluids, painkillers and anti-sickness medication as soon as a cannula could be fitted. I am horrendously needle phobic and I explained this to the nurses and doctor but they were all very rude and simply passed me off as stupid! I requested numbing cream (Ametop) to be used prior to cannula being fitted and this was initially refused, however after several arguments they finally gave in and allowed it. I felt this was absolutely disgusting as, surely when a patient explains they are petrified of needles and numbing the area may help slightly, the medical staff should do what they can to help not make the patient feel ridiculous for asking! My cannula was finally fitted at 3am (it would have been done much quicker had we not had to argue over the need for the use of Ametop!) however, I still did not received any of the medications advised and I was still vomiting violently and struggling to even lift my head without being sick! I was sent to X-Ray and made to sit up, in agony (due to no painkillers etc) for 15 minutes in order for them to take a chest X-Ray (when my condition had nothing to do with my chest! I had severe abdominal pain and vomiting!). I was asked to provide another urine pregnancy test and was asked to fill in a form, when I asked my partner to fill in the form as I couldn't even look at it without vomiting and I couldn't hold the pen as I was so weak, the nurses were quite rude and told me it was 'against procedure' to have someone fill in the form for me. I was moved to Ward 14 at around 4:45am (still with no medication, in horrendous pain and still vomiting!). Eventually at 5:15am I managed to stumble to the nurses station to beg for some painkillers, fluids and anti-sickness medication. These were finally administered at around 5:45am by the rudest nurse known to man! She waltzed into my cubicle without a word and started to hook me up to an IV. when asked what it was she was giving me she snapped 'Just Fluids!' And when asked about the other medication she snapped again 'you don't need them, you're not being sick now!' Eventually she came back with some painkillers and anti-sickness medication. During my stay I had to constantly remind my consultant of my symptoms and still he didn't listen! I was discharged on Wednesday (7th May). My discharge note says that I was diagnosed with constipation (I wasn't, I didn't have constipation, I had severe vomiting and abdominal pain following any food or drink) it also states I am eating & drinking fine with no vomiting, this is not the case as I still cannot keep food or water down without pain and vomiting!
