I accompanied my mother who is 87 for her cataract operation the other week and was astounded to find that I was not allowed to sit and wait with her but was told I could wait outside the room a few yards away or go home and return after the operation, I am fortunate that I live near by but having to sit outside the room a few yards away made no sense at all, there were plenty of seats as there was only six people waiting for operations. The staff were very apologetic and told me it was new rules...Having to leave a nervous older person on their own before an operation is bad policy..it would be nice to see this abolished.

Thank you for your post. We are sorry to hear about your experience. This is a new policy which has just been brought in, which mirrors the policy on the main Day surgery unit at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals. The new policy has been brought in as the eye ward at St Peter’s Hospital is getting increasingly busy, so it has been decided that’s its best that relatives drop the patients off and collect them after the surgery. The eye ward has general anaesthetic cases and local anaesthetic cases and we have to maintain privacy and dignity to all the patients. This is an open area so it is better to have this area as patients only. Having the relatives in the same area compromises this. Some patients who have a communication problem will be assessed on an individual basis, if they require there relative to stay with them.
