About: Queen Mary's Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

When you do actually get to the doctors and nurses who are to deal with your case, they are very helpful and they care, and their abilities are beyond reproach. Most of the main hospital (and the day care unit I visited) was very clean. Surgical staff seem to try very hard to do a good job. However, it isn't very easy to get to them.....

What could be improved

Admin staff are at best dismissive and at worst utterly rude. My wife and I were dealing with some very upsetting issues, and our files were constantly lost. As a result, we sat in a maternity ward whilst we waited for a termination date, were accused of trying to 'take over' a room booked for consultants when admin had put us in a quiet room (i.e. to get my wife out of the way of babies, considering we were about to terminate ours). The Women's Unit is filthy, and frankly it looks like a slum. I cannot use polite terms to adequately convey how much we detest the way admin staff treat patients. They completely and utterly let down the good work being carried-on by surgical staff.

Anything else?

Surgical staff try hard, but the behaviour of admin staff is so truly inept and offensive that my impression of this hospital is that of a highly inefficient organisation, where staff do not think about the patient at all. The tragedy is that all of the good work carried-out by surgical staff is undermined by the callous and frankly clueless behaviour of the admin side of the place.
