"Exceptional hospital"

About: Glenfield Hospital

My baby daughter was transferred to Glenfield from Nottingham in February having discovered that she had a dilated cardiomyopathy of unknown aetiology. From the minute we arrived on ward 30 we were made to feel welcome and in safe hands, and I had every confidence in the staff providing care for my daughter. The consultant doing the ward round on that Saturday morning immediately knew who we were and within an hour or so of arriving at the hospital on that weekend morning, he had personally scanned her heart and gave us a plan of action. His manner and kind nature put us at ease and gave us much needed hope that a cause for our baby's problem might be found and solved. The kind nurses settled us onto the ward and gave me confidence in themselves and the team. Within a few days our daughter had undergone daily scans of her heart and proceeded to angiography. This found the problem and our daughter was scheduled for open heart surgery the next morning. The consultant surgeon who was to perform the surgery was very professional yet understanding when he consented us for her procedure. The night before our daughter's surgery was very difficult as a mother. Yet, the staff nurse who was our assigned nurse that night stayed with us for extended periods through the night and provided such needed emotional support and was truly exceptional. Our daughter's surgery was a success and she spent just a day on intensive care (PICU) and again, the care here was wonderful. The extremely competent nurses communicated exceptionally well and made a dreadful experience so very bearable. A further week or so of recovery on Ward 30 was again supported by excellent staff and doctors. Daily ward rounds (including at weekends) meant that we were kept up to date with progress. There was very good consultant presence, even at weekends. The cleaning staff and house keepers were also very personable and made difficult days just that little bit easier. I also never thought I'd say that hospital food was nice, but it really was! The choice was good, the kitchen staff who took orders friendly, and the food tasty. We now return regularly to the outpatient clinic to monitor my daughter's progress. The clinic is extremely well run. We have a lot to be grateful to Glenfield for, as not only did they save my daughter's life, but they did so in such a caring and compassionate way. Thank you to every member of the team.
