"Ghost town"

About: Friarage Hospital Site

Attended A&E on Sunday evening with a young child and after nearly five hours waiting in a department that had only two other people in the whole time we were there , the wait seemed unreasonable. Staff update on what was happening was very poor, even if someone could manage to come into the waiting room once every hour to let people know what is happening it would be better. There appears to be no concept of the difficulty of keeping an injured child up until after ten pm when you have arrived at half past five. If this unit is busy and that is the reason people have to wait then it can be understood, but at the moment the impression given to the public is that it is a quiet unit with very poor management of patient traffic.

Good morning Thank you for your feedback regarding you and your child's attendance at the Accident & Emergency Department, within the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton. I forwarded your concerns to the relevant management team within the department. They have looked at the activity on the day in question and although there only appeared to be a small number of patients, the location was actually the paediatric waiting area; in addition to this the staff were dealing with 20 patients in the department as a whole. Staff do accept that communication should have been better and the waiting times shared with patients and relatives and they would like to sincerely apologise that this did not happen. Your comments will be shared with all staff that they need to be reminded to communicate with patients in the paediatric and adult waiting areas. Thank you for sharing your concerns. If you would like to discuss them further, please do not hesitate to contact my office on 01642 854500. With best wishes Mrs Linda Oliver Patient Experience Co-ordinator
