"Assessment ward"

I was admitted to the assessment ward in the early hours of Saturday 3 May. I thought the admission was quite thorough but it turned out I wasn't given a wristband. I'd been told I would be nil by mouth in A&E but was told on the ward that wouldn't be necessary... thankfully. I was in a side ward and when the nurse left me I settled down to sleep but the bed was still in sitting position with no pillow, I didn't want to make a fuss so I manoeuvred down the bed, curled up and used my jumper as a pillow. After a while I needed the loo, I'd been told in A&E I wasn't to walk about so I buzzed and the bank nurse who was only on her second shift at Sandwell and the most professional nurse I was going to encounter got a bedpan but couldn't find the plastic pan for it to sit in, she was told to double up on the card pan and it would be ok. It wasn't, it split with blood and urine going all over the bed. To help her I just got out of bed so that she could re-make it. The sheet on the bed had been doubled over so that every time you move you end up with it scrunched up and sitting on the plastic mattress, the nurse made the bed properly she also gave me a top sheet to go with the blanket that I'd come up from A&E with (blankets seem to be a luxury on this ward), she also managed eventually to find me a pillow. Te following day I was pretty much left to my own devices, I'd been told that I'd be going for an X-ray , but when the consultant came to see me he gave me his diagnosis of my condition and said I could go home and not to bother with the X-ray. When he'd left the room I talked with the nurse and it was agreed that if the X-Ray was already booked I may as well go for it. I was also in a lot of abdominal pain and still losing blood. It wasn't long before the porter came for me and that was when they realised I didn't have a wrist tag, so one was made with wrong spelling of my name, which I didn't notice at the time! Once back from X-ray in front of visiting friends and husband I had a visit from another doctor, I told him that I'd been told I could go home but that I was still in a lot of abdominal pain and was still losing blood. He suggested I stay and that a camera procedure had been booked for next day and that if I went home I'd have to come back for it. Based on that information I stayed. Later that evening I was moved to a four bed room on same ward. The bed was made with the sheet doubled over just covering the middle, so I re-made the bed and a nurse called across the room to me and said that was how all the beds were made, I explained about it moving about and ending up on bare plastic, she made me feel awful. My pain was getting worse and I explained the painkillers weren't helping but I was just given more. There were several more incidents where I was spoken to with total disrespect by the nurses and the final straw was when the consultant came around he didn't believe I'd been told I would be having camera procedure. Horrible experience!
