What I liked

My mother was admitted initially into the Medical Assessment ward, which although was not ideal the nursing care was excellent. However our problems started when she was transferred to another Ward. No one thought about informing me (her next of kin) and after taking half an hour to find her, we found dirty laundry left in the corner of her room, the floor looked sticky and was dirty. She repeatly during a morning asked for her water jug to be filled and when at visiting time it was still not attended to, we went to the Shop to buy her some water.The comode used during the night was not emptied the following morning and my mother had to ask for this to be seen too. My mother was asked if, as she was still sitting in her chair at 11 p.m. she intended sleeping there - her reply was that she was still waiting for her bed to be made. For a lady of 88 this is far from satisfactory. She was discharged on Christmas Eve and although she came to stay with me, the OT staff said they would contact me after the Christmas Break to see if when she returned to her own home she needed anything. To date, some week later, I have not heard anything from them.

What could be improved

I think there could be far more communication between the medical staff and patients and next of kin. The provision of care for routine things such as water definitely is of concern as well as the cleanliness of floors etc.
