To outline her situation I have summarised the recent timeline below:
My mother was advised of my grandmother's critical illness at the beginning of March this year and rushed to be here from Canada, not knowing how long she would have with her mother. Her daughters here and in Canada raised the funds for her flight to the UK, to say her final farewell.
She arrived in the England in late March and the extended family here have helped in every way possible to make her stay a happy one under the circumstances.
Sadly her mother passed away in early April, so she and her brother made arrangements for her funeral and are currently dealing with her final estate here in Southampton.
On the day of my grandmother's funeral, my mother was taken ill. She was advised to attend A&E, where she was told that the sickness would pass. She only received blood tests and urine test, despite requesting an ultrasound, as the pain was so severe in her stomach. However, they did not listen to her and sent her home that evening with nothing. Over the Easter weekend the illness got worse. An ambulance was called, and my mother requested a medical professional come to the flat, where he performed 'tests' and ruled it as gastritis.
A few days later, my mother was admitted to hospital with a strangulated hernia and underwent emergency surgery that evening to save her life. Now she and her daughters are facing an estimated $15,000 health bill, despite her being a born and bred UK Citizen and holding a UK passport.
This morning I was finally able to get a hold of a nurse at Southampton General Hospital, who was not much help, unless I probed for answers. It seemed a chore to request the doctor's name and ask for her to call me, once she was out of her CT scan, as my mother is still in a lot of pain despite this surgery she had. I have asked repeatedly for a doctor to call me, provide a full medical report, and expense breakdown, as I am not sure what we are being charged for.
Our extended family can only do so much. We are her daughters, struggling with the fact we just lost our grandmother and almost our mother, because the previous two times an ambulance and medical help was provided they passed her off and just gave her paracetamol and gavascon.
I need help. I need support and guidance. I don't know where to turn as no one answers me!
