"Completely different standards of care"

About: Gilbert Bain Hospital NHS Grampian

(as the patient),

I had an appointment at the Out Patient Clinic at the Gilbert Bain Hospital. I was offered no treatment whatsoever, even though I had said that the painkillers I am currently taking are doing nothing for me. I basically got told to live with it (pain).

A few weeks later, I saw a doctor from NHS Grampian because of this same pain, this doctor gives me a very thorough examination.

Because of this NHS Grampian doctor, I get referred for a scan, I got referred to get a support and I also got referred to get physiotherapy. So why did the NHS Shetland doctor offer me nothing? To be honest, I am glad, as I am getting far better care where I am now.

I am sorry that you feel you experienced some inconsistency between the service you received from Shetland and Aberdeen medical teams. If you would like to contact me with more information so that I can look into this matter for you and provide a detailed response then I would be very happy to do that.

I appreciate the time you have taken to give us this feedback because we are continually reviewing our services to ensure we make improvements where we can and we will share your feedback with OutPatient Teams.

Best wishes

What do you mean when you say ( you "feel" you experienced some inconsistency )? What part of I was offered not treatment from Gilbert Bain do you not understand? yet a Doctor from Aberdeen as said before recommended and referred me to get a scan, a support and physiotherapy, all good, normal and appropriate procedure for my pain that I should have had from NHS Shetland.

Aberdeen had no Medical Notes or acknowledgement from NHS Shetland who had already seen me yet they were more than happy to help and wanted to find the cause of pain.

I have already informed a London Based third party for their opinion on this matter, they are waiting for the scan results and as soon as I get them, I will take it from there but not with NHS Shetland Complaints Department.

If you would like to discuss this matter in more detail so the NHS Shetland clinical team can better explain the assessment and actions taken I would be happy to facilitate that (my contact details are enclosed).

I just want to clarify that I am the Director responsible for services at the hospital so if there are issues relating to your care that we can better explain or support then I would be happy to do that.

Best wishes

Kathleen

Dear Kathleen Carolan, thanks for both of your replies. NHS Shetland have already given me their opinion on my query, as to why this doctor whom I saw as an Out Patient at the Giilbert Bain Hospital, chose to give me no or recommend any treatment for me.

The feedback that I received from NHS Shetland (not the complaint department) was, this doctor still stands by their decision by not recommending any treatment for me.

I am more than happy in how the doctor from NHS Grampian is treating me, but I have to admit, I am a little surprised by the two different attitudes in how both doctors treat and examine the same patient, same injury/pain with the NHS Grampian doctor coming out top every time.

Its a shame that once I had informed NHS Shetland about my query, they did not pass this onto to you, as I feel you would have given me a more realistic explanation, investigation than what I received as a reply.

I will wait until I get scan results before I decide to take your offer or I stay with the third party.
