I have had 3 operations in the last 4 years and on each occasion I was on Ashton ward. My last operation was a Total shoulder replacement and I am awaiting another shoulder replacement. Everyone who cared for me were very kind and I was monitored constantly which was very reassuring. The ward and toilets were clean and the volunteers who came to help with personal needs were wonderful. I ate very little during my stay but the lunch I had on the last day was lovely. Prior to my last operation the anaesthetist visited me and offered a Spinal Block, an extra pain relief which gave me great comfort after a bad experience following a shoulder arthroscopy the year before. The staff on that occasion came instantly to my bedside and I can only say how grateful I was for their instant response. Everyone who cared for me were respectful and kind and very efficient. The nurses were so busy and I remember thinking they were a little short staffed and do a wonderful job. There was only one exception; on my last night, after my last operation, a nurse did not treat me well. I felt upset and bewildered. She took my crutch away and out of my reach as she said I didn't need it, which I did, and she also took my alarm bell and placed it where I couldn't reach it as it was on the side I'd had operated on. She refused to give me the Morphine I was supposed to have at 10pm and we had an argument about it . Then gave me Tramadol together with Zolpidem. Afterwards when I realised. she got a Doctor who said he would monitor me for anaphylaxis shock, and by this time I was very groggy but very reassured. The next morning the day nurse continued to prescribed me morphine and I did not tell her what had happened. Nevertheless it was a one off incident and I hold no bad feeling about it. I must say that after each operation I am so grateful to have had them done. They have given me a new lease of life and the surgeons who do these operations are wonderful . I was in so much pain before and will always be immensely thankful. My last 2 operations were under the care of a brilliant Doctor and will be performing my next shoulder replacement. The previous ones were by another brilliant surgeon, and I recommend Kettering Hospital to anyone who needs orthopaedic surgery.
"A very happy outcome"
