"A visitors impression of Simpson Ward"

About: Hemel Hempstead Hospital

Does the ward manager know what happens on this ward when he/she is not there? Here's my 90 minute impression...... The good part; friendly staff to me and my husband and, friendly in front of us, to my father in law during our time on the ward. However..during our 90 minute visit two staff (? one qualified nurse, and one unqualified nurse)spent entire time engrossed in watching a football match on the TV in the middle of the ward. One patient was also watching though the staff were not talking to him. The nurse, who I think was qualified, was intermittently writing in patients notes but seemed mainly engrossed in the sport. During this time the needs of the other 5 patients were not regarded though they were uncomplaining. One man looked lonely and I had to fight the urge to go and talk to him. I have just completed a Return to Practice nursing course and I was horrified that the patients were left with so little stimulation and so sedentary. My father in law was not helped to walk on any days that the physiotherapist was absent from ward.(i.e. all weekends and bank holidays). Is it not a nursing role to liaise with the physio and carry out exercises with patients in their absence?
