"Post Operative Appointments - Or Not"

About: St Albans City Hospital

I was very impressed with the treatment I received on the day of the procedure. The Consultant, Anaesthetist, and ward staff were amazing. Every option was available to discuss treatment, pain relief etc. Which is why I am so amazed that no thought was given to Post Op aftercare. No appointments had been made on my behalf for any follow up treatment / wound care. I was told to make an appointment with the GP Practice nurse One week after the procedure. This involved getting a Taxi there and back.(Partial weight bearing, on crutches for 4 weeks) On my arrival the Nurse was unable to find any information from the hospital. Luckily I had taken with me my copy of the discharge notes. The Nurse said that a district nurse should have been arranged..I was given a certificate for work for 2 weeks only which means that I will need to obtain a certificate for a further 2 weeks from my GP. Which I am unable to collect. My discharge notes also mention an out patients follow up in four weeks with X ray on arrival. Waited two weeks, heard nothing. So I decided to check and discovered that no appointment had been made. Surely all this should have been dealt with prior to my discharge. Last year I had surgery at Watford General. The treatment by some of the staff was just awful, the cleanliness was poor. Little or no explanation was given regarding treatment . However their after care was spot on. District nurse, Physiotherapy, Loan of essential equipment. What a shame that both hospitals can't get it right. With a bit of effort you could be amazing.
