"I could not have done this without the help and support from all the staff at the Smithfield services"

About: Turning Point Substance Misuse Services / Smithfield Residential Detoxification Unit

(as a service user),

Completed my 10th detox in April 2013, at the Smithfield Service in Manchester. As with every other time I came in I was treated with respect and dignity not judged for coming back in.

I have always completed opiate detox, this time detoxed from Methadone 60mls with use of heroin and benzo's on top. I also completed a benzodiazpine detox from 30mg diazapam.

My physical symptoms were well managed, I felt ok and was supported around my sleep. I felt secure and supported by all the staff.

The groups were a big part of my detox, really started to look at underlying factors as to why I used. I found the relaxation and acupuncture really good as well. But the best thing Smithfield ever done for me was introduce me to NA. They attend twice weekly meetings and have NA coming in once a week. I found this valuable and am celebrating one year total abstinence from all substance in two weeks time.

I also attend the aftercare support group on a Wednesday and a Sunday and have completed the peer mentor training and now work as a peer mentor on the detox unit at Smithfield. This is invaluable experience and led me on to work at probation and has led me into bridging the gap and I have recently graduated from their 16 week programme and going back as a mentor on their next course.

I could not have done this without the invaluable help and support from all the staff at the Smithfield services. I have massive gratitude.
