In short disgust! I am an expat brit who has been living in germany for over 30 years and afully trained german nurse having specialized on german surgical wards. I flew over to support my brother after his total colon removal , knowing this op I expected him to be in the phase where I could support him and the staff with this nastynew situation, over the telephone I had positivly built him up, as the time to fly got closer the telephone reports dis not report progress his stoma was not producing. As I arrived I obviously greeted fellow nurses warmly being a nurse myself, and all was very freindly. We nurses are the salt of the earth in any hospital worldwide or? Ok brother way behind normal international standards, lets see if I can help ward 14 was my idea, first step speak to the senior ward sister how is my brother on the 10 day post op care plan , sister got very narkey indeed and very short meeting over me totaly flabergastered. The next days went, the doc in charge was home a week before easter with her kids and had left another to keep her patients simmering on low flame till ghe tuesday after easter, all attempts to contakt her or her duty replacement failed. Brother got worse, every tip I tried to implementto mobilize him and his intestines was compleatly ignored, I got angry and started looking behind the scenes. As a trained profeshional knowing german, french dutch and italian standards of medicine, and nursing I have no option whatsoever ogher than to say that I find the standards the worst I have ever seen in europe. On the surface millions of people swarm around on ward being nice, a hospital however should be a place of profeshional exelence, this hospital is named a university hospital, with this I think it is also a teaching hospital. If this is the case, all teaching should be imediatly halted till the problems have been sorted out. I would like now to take fhe nursinng staff into care and support, a few nurses opened up to me and basicaly confirmed to me thatthe problemswith my brother they were seeing them but, had their hands tied by the doctors, by the way I identified them easily they were trendely dressed in none hygienic street clothes which were worn for days on end as the dirt marks proved, and were definetly not clean, but if they want to infect their folks at home thats their stuff, I am just peeved that they rub up against one risk patient after another! The whole world uses daily a fresh white coat. One young femaildoc with stretch clothes a d a pink handbag used the bloody thing like a vacination wand Iit was on ghe floor,, on a bed on her knee, on another bed. I just could not believe that lister and semmelweiss and gheir thair teachings are so ignored! Ok the nursing mistakes are just so many it is impossible here to even start.
