"Many Thanks To All Staff On South Crofty Trauma..."

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske)

On Sunday 6th April I was admitted to the South Crofty Trauma ward with a broken ankle. Having lived abroad for some years (and having heard some "horror" stories about local hospitals) l was extremely surprised how compassionate, friendly and professional all members of staff were, despite their very busy, intensive work days.(or nights) From the moment I arrived staff took time to explain what was going on and make me feel comfortable. Like many patients who suddenly find themselves unable to get out of bed, I was extremely worried about having to suddenly be reliant on bedpans and help! Yet all staff were brilliant, matter of fact and showed enormous patience in the ongoing hard work of having to bring bedpans, commodes and change sheets for patients of all ages. Both day and night staff work extremely hard, taking time after each patient to wash hands with disinfectant gel before moving on to next patient or job. Each member of staff has a name badge and, during my ten days stay on the ward, I felt very well cared for by each one of them. It is incredibly hard to suddenly fins your world limited to a hospital bed but the positive attitudes, sense of humour and helpfulness of staff help enormously. Other staff, such as cleaning staff and staff covering mealtimes are just as lovely, taking time and care for each individual patient. The meals were also very good and the only thing I would like to see improved is more fruit on offer at breakfast time. But that's minimal and overall, the meals were varied, balanced and tasty. The man who delivers menus and serves the meals is extremely polite and fellow patients and I commented on how he makes us feel we are in a restaurant rather than a hospital! Overall, my stay in the ward was a very positive experience whereby, despite the pain and inconvenience of breaking my ankle and all that it entails, I do feel that I was excellently looked after in the hospital and feel all members of staff should be very proud of the fantastic job they do, many thanks
