"Natural birth at home"

About: Bristol PCT St Michael's Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I have a one year old son who was born at our home thanks to the care and attention of a handful of midwives in Bristol - one of whom was a student at the time - and I just want to express what amazing people they all were - they were based at Hampton House in Bristol - and were overworked and stressed as much as any other midwives probably - but were so incredible at looking after me and my baby (and husband) prior to the birth and during it. They were really excited about the home birth and encouraged me to stick to the plan even when I had a wobble. The student midwife was amazing. She took time when she would sit with me and just listen to my breathing or just chat according to what was going on - and was very sensitive about examining me. Luckily all went to plan - apart form it being so long - 26 hours - and we had a beautiful baby boy - despite there being a power cut a couple of hours before he crowned. I was so glad that I could give birth where I was warm, relaxed and could feel confident in expressing myself - moving about - making noises - adopting positions which were helpful - and not feel self conscious or restricted. I feel it would be such a shame if cut backs meant that midwives were unable to do home deliveries. It was the most incredible experience of my life and those women were the best most strong confidence inspiring companions to have around me.
