"My Mother's short term stay"

About: Kettering General Hospital

My Mother, who is 90 this year, was admitted with a suspected broken hip. She also has cancer and was badly anaemic and de-hydrated. When I visited she told me she had never felt so cold in her life, and there was often no response when she rang her bell. She was in a side room on her own, so even another patient could not ring for her. I went and found a nurse who then gave Mum 2 extra blankets. I had taken an overnight bag along with 4 boxes of medication she needed. When I asked her where all her tablets were, she didn't know. It turned out the whole lot had been "lost" and there was not even an apology. A nurse just said "they must be here somewhere", but they were never found. It was a new repeat prescription with a months supply of treatment lost. I said I now had nothing to give her when she came home, to which I was told it would all be replaced when she left. She was having bad problems with her hearing aids at the same time, and could barely hear a word anyone was saying to her, so I spoke to Audiology and they arranged with the staff in her ward that if someone wheeled her over to them, they would try and rectify her aids. A couple of days later I discovered no one had taken her for her appointment at all, and worse still, they never even let Audiology know they weren't going either, and her ward staff left me thinking they had taken her! I phoned Audiology again and apologised to them for her not turning up and explained it was not her fault. When I asked her ward staff what happened, they said they would ring me back - but never did. When she returned home and I unpacked her things, I also found whereas she had gone in with a box of 100 Paracetamol, they sent her out with just a small box of 32, which means she will now run out before her repeat is due for dispensing again. So what with her Paracetamol, Thyroid tabs, and Morphine patches going missing, then the lack of staff answering her buzzer when she needed them, her appointment being ignored without explanation even, and her replacement pills wrong, I am relieved her stay was only 4 days and not a month! They never did find out what was wrong either, just that it wasn't a fracture. Mum was in Barnwell C. Ward. and it is this ward only that I am not happy with. I have had a lot of help from other departments in the hospital previously.
