"Early Pregnancy Unit"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow)

I went to the EPU with worries about my pregnancy. They ran all the appropriate tests but I feel that because I decided against one of their recommendations they changed their opinion and didn't want to help me. I haven't had the results of some of the tests and was fobbed off every time I rang. In my highly emotional state I feel I have been made to feel like a fraud and it has made my anxiety higher. No help at all!

Dear Anonymous, It is saddening to read that you feel your voice and your views were not respected in the consultation you had on EPU. This is something we know we have to improve on, as we believe that patients who come to us for help should be respected for their knowledge of their condition, both through how they feel, as patients, but also because you understand best how your body works. Although we have run the right tests from a technical perspective, we've clearly not done a good job of working with you to agree next steps or been responsive when you've needed to talk and that is not how we want to be treated, so it's clearly not acceptable for us to treat you in this way. There are several next steps you can take from this point. The first, I would suggest, would be to call the Maternity Helpline on 01279 827286. They will be able to address the specific concerns you have about your care and put in place some next steps for you. The second, is that you contact us in the Patient Experience Team on 01279 82 72 11 and we will be able to take further details of what happened, we will speak to the Service Manager involved and their clinical team to see how we can address the lack of involvement you experienced in decision making about your care and consider how we could address this as a wider issue. We are ready to take your call, please call between Monday and Friday, 9am to 5pm.
