"Minor Injuries Waiting Time for Young Patients"

About: Wycombe Hospital

I brought my 6yr old daughter to the Minor Injuries Unit with a badly sprained ankle and a concern of a possible broken bone. We waited over an hour and a half for our initial consultation even though the waiting room had only two or three patients waiting at any one time. After an hour I asked at reception when we were going to be seen, I was told the wait is usually an hour, that we were next on the list and in fact there was no one else after us anyway, despite arriving first thing in the morning and being the second people waiting in a very quiet waiting room. 90 minutes for an initial consultation is too long for a 6yr old to wait. We then had to wait for an X Ray and wait again for the diagnosis, all in all we were at the hospital for nearly three hours. There were no magazines, books, toys to keep us entertained while we waited, just a "spot the animal trail" around the waiting room which wasn't a good idea to follow with a sore ankle. The treatment and care was very good but the wait was just too long for a small child in an empty waiting room with no distraction other than looking at the time.
