After being messed around by The Lister Hospital, Hertfordshire, for my first consultant's appointment, with two appointments cancelled and rearranged by them for nor specific reason, I asked my GP to change my referral, via Choose and Book, to Addenbrooke's. I got an appointment in January, only 3 weeks after re-referral (and still earlier than the twice rearranged appointment at The Lister). On attending my appointment, arriving in ample time, I had the routine weighing and height, etc., then I was called at exactly my appointment time. I was seen by a student doctor, understandable as it's a teaching hospital, and I was asked if that was ok anyway. Appointment handled well, then the senior consultant joined the student to confirm things and arrange date for surgery. By this time, my planned trip abroad had got in the way of any hope of early surgery, due to the recovery time (restriction on lifting heavy objects), so agreed for 11 days after my return to the UK (very sensibly allowing time in case I came back unwell). I thought it excellent that the appointment was made there and then, not having to wait to receive and appointment in the post. I was also pleased by the reassurance given by the consultant/surgeon that it would be highly unlikely that my hernia would worsen whilst away. My surgery, in April 2014, was at the Day Surgery Unit at Princess of Wales Hospital, Ely. I can't give a review for there separately on NHS Choices as, in NHS Choices, only the other departments there are listed, under Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust. So, my review here covers my time there too. The unit seemed to be an efficiently run unit, with only a small number of helpful and caring staff and doctors providing an excellent service. I felt well looked after, everything explained well, the surgery appears to have been fine (still recovering but active and all well). Having 4 slices of toast and marmalade and 2 cups of tea after coming around after the anaesthesia was very welcome! And the car park is free! My only issue was that on arriving early, although the sign on the door said unit doors open 7:30am, I actually had to wait in the car about another 15 minutes - trivial!
