"the care my mother received from ..."

About: University Hospital Of North Tees

(as a relative),

What I liked

the care my mother received from a+e, through to the assessment ward was excellent.

the lovely staff in icu really looked after her

What could be improved

my mother was in theatre 3 times in the space of 4 days with life threatening necrotising fascitis.

she was admitted to ward 32 from her second theatre admission.

she was admitted to the bottom end of the ward, away from the nurses station and was not given the nurse call system.

she needed to be on a potassium infusion and heart monitor, which were only commenced by the nurse who had previously cared for her in icu after her family had phoned and spoken to her about the care she was receiving from the staff on ward 32.

on the morning she was going back to theatre for her last surgery, theatre staff were waiting outside the room while my sister got her on a bedpan and helped her wash her hands and face and brush her teeth.

my mother was very sick, she had a high temperature and it was family removing blankets from her and asking for paracetamol.

she was eventually moved to a room behind the nurse station.

we often bed bathed mum and changed her bed clothes when we arrived as it hadn't been done before.

Anything else?

whilst we appreciate ward 32 is very busy, staff need to prioritise.

Thank you for your comments and your very kind words about the care your mother received in accident and emergency and the emergency assessment unit. I am sorry you and your family feel let down by the experience your mother had while on Ward 32. These comments are of concern to us. I will pass your comments on to the director of nursing and patient safety and the matron for orthopaedics. However if you wish to have a more personal and detailed response to your concerns please write to The Patient Relations Manager, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospital of North Tees, Hardwick, Stockton on Tees, TS19 8PE. Thank you once again for taking the time to leave your comments on NHS Choices.
