"Surly Porter"

About: Royal Preston Hospital

I took my mother for treatment in the Primary Care Unit at Preston Hospital recently.. After seeing the doctor I was pushing my mother, who is eighty-seven years old and diabetic, along the corridor leading to the exit. Approaching us from the opposite direction was a nurse and a porter who were transporting a patient up to the wards on a mobile bed which was obviously fairly wide. I heard the nurse remark to the porter that they were in our way but I obviously knew that they had priority and I moved my Mum’s wheelchair to the side so that they could pass. The porter, who was pushing the bed from the rear, waited until he was level with me and then gave me a belligerent stare and growled “No, they are in our way.” I might add that this individual's attitude was in total contrast to the professional, courteous way we were treated by everyone else who we have dealt with at the hospital.
