"The main restaurant was the best part"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford)

(as the patient),

What I liked

The main restaurant was the best part

What could be improved

There was no communication. Despite my admission being planned for four months, when I arrived the ward had no idea why I had been admitted. The 2 Doctors who had arranged the admission were both on leave. They eventually found out what I was there for and started my investigations. This turned out to be a waste of time as I was forgotten and not enough blood readings had been taken and on the results they did have they "forgot" to increase my doses of medication. A complete shambles later described by the consultant as "a poorly planned admission". I thought things would get better but despite the consultant stating that treatment would be started in four weeks, I now find out that he a) had written to the wrong person to initiate treatment b) it seems that communication was so poor, there are no plans to start treatment c) because of this, I cannot start until "some time next year".

A shambles showing that management of care is now so fragmented that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing.

As a triple trained nurse, I am staggered at how poor things operate at Exeter. Speaking to other disgruntled patients in the hospital it seems my experience is far from unique.

Anything else?

Considering some wards were already closed because of infection, I was also very surprised at the general lack of adequate cleaning and the poor use of hand cleaning agents when medical staff entered the ward and its use between patients.
